Shell set to cut 330 North Sea oil jobs

Royal Dutch Shell is set to cut 330 jobs from its operations in the North Sea.

The company said most of the roles are based at its office in Aberdeen and will be lost over the next two years.

The changes will leave it with a workforce of around 1,000 people in the city.

Shell insisted that it remains committed to the North Sea and will continue to invest in its operations there.

Some of the jobs being lost will be linked to the project of decommissioning of the Brent Charlie platform, which is expected to be completed in the next two years.

The redundancies form part of the September announcement that up to 9,000 posts worldwide would go by the end of 2022, as the group reacted to a slump in demand for oil.

A report in December from offshore oil and gas industry body OGUK revealed that 85% of it members throughout the supply chain expect to increase their diversification into non-oil and gas activities during the next 12 to 24 months due to the current market conditions.

Global energy demand is expected to decrease by 5% this year, while the UK reported 12% reduction in total energy demand in the first three quarters of the year.
